3D tvs should be called 2.5Dtvs & Sony OLED 3D TV eyes-on – Engadget Galleries

I don’t get this ‘3D’ thing. 3 dimension in physics refers to the physical world we live in. Thus, as I write on my laptop, I exist in a 3 dimensional space. Comparing then the physical 3D to the TV 3D, one would understand why I don’t think these new tvs qualify to as 3D tvs- especially in the physical world. At best they are 2.5D TVs because they lack that part of physical immersion.

Look at the gallery below and you will notice that many pictures are taken at an angle to show the ‘almost-immersed’ feel that these new tvs give. Now compare that to the physical immersion in which things occur behind you. That I would call 3D.

Truthfully, electronic firms have taken a technological step (and not a leap) with the immersed feel the tv’s give. Yet lacking true physical immersion and dubbing these new tvs as 3D, it is clear that electronic firms seek catch phrases to excite consumers into buying TVs  and do not mind abusing conventional labels for this purpose.

That being said, I have not seen a 3Dtv but I have watched a ‘3D’ movie and believe that would have been better labelled as a ‘2.5D movie’
