Wind Mobile might launch soon…Observers warm to Globalive’s chances

Globalive Wireless Management Corp. poses the biggest competitive threat that Canada’s established wireless players have perhaps ever faced. Not surprisingly, Rogers Communications Inc., BCE Inc. and Telus Corp. have worked tirelessly to derail the startup carrier’s march to market.

So far, the result as been favourable.

Yet their efforts may be for naught with opinion among a growing number of industry observers and analysts suggesting Globalive’s launch is coming whether they like it or not.

The Toronto firm has been stalled for six weeks after a ruling from the nation’s regulator deemed it offside with the Telecommunications Act because it is controlled by a foreign firm, Orascom Telecom Holding SAE.

The victory may be fleeting, however. Tony Clement, the Minister of Industry, whose department approved the firm to operate after its review last March, is reconsidering the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission ruling. A deci-sion is expected any day, with many suggesting the Minister will seek a reversal with some conditions.
